The most challenging in designing a data Viz is to make sure that users discover something new in a clear and interactive way. What’s better than looking at the French Presidential election? Indeed I guess that most people are not familiar with it, especially with the crucial vote shifts between the two election rounds. But here is the magic of Tableau, this Viz will show you how the incumbent conservative President Sarkozy lost his re-election in May 2012 based on a data composed of more than 32,000 cities.
Analysis:
The French election is a two-round voting system. There is a runoff election between the two highest polling candidates if there is no absolute majority after the 1st round. In the 2012 election, Hollande (28.63%) and Sarkozy (27.18%) were through to the 2nd round. Hollande (social-democrat) was eventually elected President with 51.64% against Sarkozy (48.36%). Looking at vote shifts between the rounds is crucial to analyze this election. While Sarkozy failed to convince enough far-right voters (Le Pen voters) to win re-election in-between the two rounds, he also managed to scare off his own 1st round centrist voters. These two kinds of voters then turned to Hollande’s more moderate platform. The Viz clearly illustrates both of these results, look in particular how Le Pen and Sarkozy votes shifted between the two rounds.
Visualization:
To create this Viz, I mainly used a new feature of Tableau version 7.0: the Custom Geocoding. This dashboard shows you the power of Tableau that is able to synthesize all the leading candidates per city for both the 1st and the 2nd rounds in a concise vizualization. I also used actions and tooltips to enhance the interactivity between the user and the data.

Note:
The cities displayed are not including Corsica and the French Overseas territories to improve the appearance and clarity of this Viz. For the same reasons, I also chose not to represent the following candidates who got an overall score lower than 2% in the 1st round: Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, Philippe Poutou, Nathalie Arthaud, Jacques Cheminade.
