This Fact Checker is inspired by the Washington Post Fact Checker. It has been adapted to the 2012 French Presidential Election and I added an additional feature with the Timeline. It compares the rhetoric of the six main presidential candidates with the actual facts. The ratings are made of “Pinocchios” on a scale from 1 to 4 , the more Pinocchios a candidate has the less credible she/he was on a particular instance.

The Fact Checks are classified by Theme and Media Type. The number of Facts Checks and the Average Number of Pinocchios are automatically updated by hovering over the graphs. Click on any bar/circle to get directed to the Véritomètre website with the full analysis (in French).
Analysis:
The candidates are ordered from the candidate with the lowest average number of Pinocchios (Mélénchon, far left) to the one with the highest average (Le Pen, far right). It is interesting to notice that both Hollande (social-democrat) and Sarkozy (conservative) have a peak of Pinocchios between the two rounds of the Presidential Election during the Official campaign (strictly regulated equal media exposure time), whereas the other candidates tend to have less occurrences. Sarkozy also received a couple of Pinocchios right before the start of the Official Campaign, revealing his attempt to boost its score in the public opinion polls.
